Diaspora – Black History Month
Black History Month is celebrated in October. Every month is Black History Month but October is the time when we all come together to mark the contribution of Black peoples to culture and civilisation.
In Hackney we call it Diaspora so that we remember that Hackney is made up of people who have come from all over the world including African and The Caribbean.

Growing Up Black,
Growing Up Proud
Our theme this year is Growing Up Black, Growing Up Proud. The title comes from an exhibition of photographs by Dennis Morris.
Dennis grew up in Hackney and was the official photographer of Bob Marley and the Wailers. This web site feature pictures and biographies of people with a Hackney connection. People who are doing positive works. Men and women everyone can look up to.
"We cannot escape our origins, however hard we try, those origins which contain the key - could we but find it - to all that we later become."
James Baldwin, Notes of a Native Son, 1955
Just like a tree we cannot live without roots, they need water and earth and in time they grow and give rise to seeds that will spread and bloom".
Marcus Garvey
