The Comet Nursery school

In 2001 the school celebrated being 25 years old. All the children contributed drawings to the display shown above. The drawings were also used, on a tea towel, as a successful fund raising initiative.

The school has a welcoming reception area for parents and carers and younger children.

The Comet Nursery School provides opportunities for children to use the outdoor learning environment throughout the year. An extension canopy provides shade from the sun and protection from the rain. A local project with local artists has provided interesting features to what were previously dull walls.

The Comet Nursery School has developed a Code of Behaviour for young children. It has four points which are clearly stated in language which children are able to understand. Staff reinforce these points in their discussions with children on a day-to-day basis. They also discuss the code of behaviour with all the children and encourage them to think about how they should behave in the nursery. Examples of children’s comments are recorded and displayed in the nursery.

Children are encouraged to listen to stories and to retell them and comment on them. It is also a way of drawing their attention to sounds in a meaningful way.

They also begin to recognise letters. There is an alphabet board with name tags for children’s milk. There are alphabet carpets which can be used in a variety of ways.

The Comet staff recognise the importance of explaining to parents how the activities children take part in help to develop their learning - photographs are a helpful way of doing this.
