Support teams

1.) The SEN Intervention Team offers support for schools in putting inclusion into practice for pupils with High Incidence Needs by providing direct teaching, differentiated programmes, advice and training. We have Specialist Teachers who support literacy, language/communication, specific learning difficulties and pupils transferring between special and mainstream schools. SEN sign

Specialist Teachers support Complex Needs, ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) and BESD (Behaviour, Emotional and Social Development) As well as providing some direct teaching, we offer training and support to all schools and settings.

3.) The Access Team supports schools, early years settings and families to include pupils with a sensory impairment or medical need. Specialist Teachers and Early Support Officers for Visual Impairment and Deaf and Partially Hearing work with children and families from birth to 19 years. Multi-agency working is an essential part of the team’s work. SEN sign

The partnership with parents/carers is key. We visit homes or early years settings and support transition into school. We support SENCOs in early years settings to develop SEN policy and practice and contribute to multi-disciplinary assessment of children’s needs.

Support for schools and pupils

SENCO Forum - The Inclusion Team and Educational Psychology Service organise and run the SENCO Forum which meets twice each term. SENCOs from all phases come together to discuss SEN issues, receive relevant training and share good practice. An induction training for new SENCOs is held every Autumn Term.

Pupils with Statements of SEN - The only Statements of Special Educational Needs that currently receive additional funding from the Learning Trust, are for children and young people with complex needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (Low Incidence SEN) who require support from a range of professionals.

As well as providing statutory support for children with statements of Low Incidence SEN, the Inclusion Team offers customised INSET and training, for either the whole staff or specific groups (eg TAs). INSET is often delivered in conjunction with colleagues in the Speech and Language Therapy Service and Educational Psychologists.

We also provide an advice and consultation service, assessment for pupils at School Action Plus (eg dyslexia) and short-term teaching interventions for pupils with High Incidence Special Needs.

Whole school INSET includes

  • Developing policies eg Access and Inclusion
  • Promoting positive behaviour eg Circle Time
  • Understanding Low Incidence needs eg Autism, Complex Needs
  • Supporting pupils with High Incidence needs eg Dyslexia
  • Training for Teaching Assistants eg Language groups, 15 Minutes a Day
  • Inclusive classrooms eg Differentiation and learning styles

There is no charge to schools and settings for INSET directly related to a pupil who has a statement and is receiving support from the Inclusion Team.

  • INSET: £60 per hour, £200 per half day
  • Individual Assessment/teaching: £40 per hour
