2012 Curriculum

Year 5 - My Olympic friends: "Healthy School?" (Nutrition)

Key Skills

  • I can name all of the food groups;
  • I understand all the components of a healthy diet;
  • I can research & compare the diets of two
    specific Olympic athletes and ourselves (e.g. gymnast or body builder);
  • I can investigate the school’s attitude to healthy
    living;

Entry points
  • Different foods and groupings;
  • Looking at specific Olympians (gymnastics, power lifting etc);

Activities

  • Food research – sorting and identifying the ‘roles’ of food groups;
  • Investigate and analyse the school dinner menu and present findings to the kitchen staff, school council and SMT;
  • Keep a food diary and use to analyse alongside the school dinner menu;
  • Devise menus to add to the school menu that will make Olympians of the Future;
Outcomes
  • An age appropriate healthy living plan that takes into account different food groups and physical activity that promotes well being;
  • A presentation using data in a variety of ways and be able to interpret the data
  • Facilitate a whole school assembly that gives an overview of findings gathered
    around healthy living;
