Year 5 - My Future: "Hackney of the future" (Town planning)

Entry points
- Go on a

learning walk,

- Visit a deserted
space/building
(eg: Hackney
Central building);
Activities
- Reflect on the empty building visited in the
Entry Point. Mindmap what Hackney needs,
or might need in the future. In pairs plan and
design a use for that building;
- Study a map of Hackney. In groups highlight
the key landmarks, services green spaces,
sports facilities and big shops/shopping
centres;
- Mindmap what the future holds for Hackney.
(More people moving here for the Olympics,
more transport) What does Hackney need to
accommodate this? Play conscience alley –
children in 2 groups argue for development
versus environment;
- In pairs/groups children design and create
model of their future Hackney, focusing
on balance between green space and
development;
- Children given opportunity to present
their models to special guests (architect/
Headteacher) and 'bid' for townplanning
contract;
Outcomes
- A design for a use for an
existing empty building;
- A map, with landmarks
highlighted accurately;
- An understanding of the need
to maintain green space,
while accommodating the
needs of a big city;
- A presentation to a special
guest;
