Create an audio file

Before you pick up the microphone and record your own podcast you should do some planning, especially if you're not used to speaking to a microphone.
  • Listen to some of the more popular podcasts to get a feel for style and content;
  • Decide on topic and write an outline to help you avoid long silences in your recording;
  • Be sure to mute your speakers before your headphones are plugged in, otherwise feedback could ruin your recording;

To record voices, a good quality microphone or web cam with a built-in microphone is recommended. If you're on the go, you can use other portable recorders like PDAs, MP3 recorders, mobile phones or digital camcorders. You then simply transfer the files onto your computer using a USB cable.

Podcast-recording software

Some software lets you record and edit podcasts, create RSS feeds and upload the finished product via a built-in FTP client, but they are usually not free. We have listed below some of them that are free and easy to use.

- Using Sound Recorder (Sound Recorder outputs .wav audio file which can be converted to MP3 file using iTunes);

- Using Audacity (Free audio editing and recording software)

- Using the LGfL podcast system (an on-line recording facility has been build it). Please refer to the User guide on how to Recording a new podcast episode. You may have to create the channel first.

Note: if you decide to add music, sound effects and other audio in your recording, you should respect copyright laws.
