Planning for Literacy: Developing Early writing

Developing Early Writing is a DfES document to support planning and teaching of writing in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

All Key Stage 1 and Reception teachers should have a copy of the book. It is available free from the DfES. The book contains exemplar writing units for each term. In addition, there is information about handwriting, the development of writing in Reception and sentence level activities for Year 2.

The units are based on a recommended sequence for teaching writing:
